Safe Sleep Week: Helping Your Baby Sleep Safely

At Stork Beginnings, we know that every parent wants to give their baby the best start in life. One of the most important ways to do this is by ensuring a safe sleep environment. That’s why we’re supporting Safe Sleep Week—a time to raise awareness about the best ways to protect your little one while they rest.

Why Safe Sleep Matters

Every year, hundreds of babies in the UK die suddenly and unexpectedly in their sleep. Many of these tragic deaths are linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as cot death. However, research shows that by following a few simple steps, parents and caregivers can significantly reduce the risk.

The Gold Standard for Safe Sleep

The Lullaby Trust and Safe Sleep Scotland provide essential guidance on how to create the safest possible sleep environment for babies. Here are the key recommendations:

Back to Sleep – Always place your baby on their back for every sleep, including naps and night time.

Keep the Cot Clear – No pillows, blankets, cot bumpers, or stuffed toys. Just a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet.

Share a Room (Not a Bed) – Keep baby in your room for at least the first six months, but in their own cot, Moses basket, or crib.

Avoid Overheating – Dress baby in a light sleeping bag or appropriate sleepwear instead of using blankets. Keep the room temperature between 16-20°C.

No Smoking Around Baby – Smoking during pregnancy or around your baby after birth increases the risk of SIDS.

Breastfeed If You Can – Breastfeeding is linked to a lower risk of SIDS.

Use a Dummy (Optional) – Some research suggests offering a dummy at sleep time may reduce SIDS risk.

Bed-Sharing & Co-Sleeping: What Parents Need to Know

While many parents choose to bed-share, it’s important to know the risks. The risk of SIDS increases when:

❌ You or your partner have been drinking, smoking, or taking drugs.

❌ Your baby was born prematurely or has a low birth weight.

❌ You fall asleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair—this is extremely dangerous.
